According to a recent source, the iPhone 17 series, which is scheduled for release in the fall, might include ProMotion 120Hz screens on the entry-level model, something that fans have been asking for for years. This is the report’s conclusion.
However, the display was the one area where the vast array of improvements had left the non-Pro iPhones behind. A 60Hz refresh rate screen is a feature that Apple has obstinately maintained in both the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus.
Many noted that an Android phone, which has a faster refresh-rate display than the iPhone 16, can be purchased for a lot less money.
According to a recent claim from the South Korean website ET News, the upcoming iPhone may alter all of this since all models of the iPhone 17 series will use the same Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide panel technology.
Apple currently employs that same technology in the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. The standard iPhones employ LTPS, which is less expensive to make but consumes more power.
ET News, which refers to the non-Pro iPhones as the general models, claims that a switch to LTPO would indicate that “Apple has chosen to fully apply LTPO to enhance the performance of the general model.”
You say, “Hold on, no reference to 120Hz is made here.”
True, but it’s difficult to deny that it will also happen because LTPO enables changing refresh rates while using less power, which means Apple may launch ProMotion without compromising battery life.
Another indication that ProMotion is imminent is the anticipated release of Apple’s fourth-generation iPhone SE in the spring. Many of the flagship series iPhones’ features, including a 48-megapixel camera, an all-screen design with Face ID, and an upgrade to OLED, are anticipated to be included.
To keep customers from switching to the less expensive SE, Apple must make a distinction between the SE and the iPhone 17.
